🌊 Reminder: IMO-Recommended Measures – Watch for Whales in the Gulf of Panama (Pacific Approach to the Panama Canal)

As part of our ongoing commitment to navigational safety and environmental stewardship, we wish to remind our clients and partners of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s recommendations regarding safe navigation within the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in the Gulf of Panama, particularly during the annual migration of humpback whales.

Each year, from August 1 through November 30, humpback whales migrate through the waters adjacent to the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal. During this period, vessels are encouraged to adopt specific measures to minimize the risk of ship strikes and reduce underwater noise, helping to protect these endangered marine mammals.

While the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has not yet issued the 2025 Advisory, the forthcoming guidance is expected to mirror the recommendations outlined in Advisory to Shipping A-24-2024. These measures include:

  • Use of the recommended Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in the Pacific approach to the Canal

  • Adherence to speed restrictions in designated areas to reduce collision risk with marine mammals

These recommendations are consistent with the IMO’s broader strategy to enhance the protection of marine biodiversity along major shipping routes.

We encourage all shipowners, operators, and masters to review Advisory to Shipping A-24-2024 as a reliable reference in anticipation of the 2025 season. Preparing ahead ensures that operational planning aligns with best practices for both environmental protection and navigational efficiency.

At ASA, we fully support the IMO and ACP's initiatives to foster sustainable maritime operations, and we will continue to keep our clients informed as soon as the 2025 advisory is officially published.
